Girl Gut FAQs

Everything we create is designed to help you feel balanced, confident and connected to your body. Explore evidence-based answers to the questions women ask us most, grouped by topic so you can jump to what matters for you.

Menstrual Cycle

What is a "normal" menstrual cycle length?

A typical cycle lasts 21 to 35 days, counted from Day 1 of your period to the start of the next. Variations up to 7 days are common; consistent cycles outside that range are worth investigating.

Is it normal to skip a period occasionally?

Yes, especially with stress, travel, intense exercise, or weight changes. If you're not pregnant and it happens more than 3 times a year, speak to a practitioner. We can help you map what's driving it.

Why do I get cramps during my period?

Cramps are caused by prostaglandins, hormone-like compounds that make the uterus contract to shed its lining. Higher prostaglandin levels and a magnesium-poor diet make cramps worse; anti-inflammatory eating and gentle movement help.

Hormones 101

What causes PMS bloating?

Progesterone slows gut motility. A quick fix: magnesium (spinach, dark chocolate) + fermented foods.

Cycle, Gut & Nutrition Intersection

Can low iron cause heavy periods, or vice versa?

Heavy periods deplete iron; low iron thickens the uterine lining, worsening flow, a vicious cycle. Test ferritin; pair red meat or lentils with vitamin C (capsicum, citrus) for absorption.

Is the pill affecting my gut microbiome?

Oral contraceptives reduce microbial diversity and Bifidobacterium (2021 review in Frontiers in Microbiology). Post-pill, a 3-month focus on fermented foods + fibre usually restores balance.

I have IBS, does my cycle make it worse?

Yes. Estrogen receptors in the gut increase sensitivity pre-period; progesterone slows transit. Keep a food, symptom and cycle diary; low-FODMAP in the luteal phase often helps.

Nutrition for Hormones & Cycle

Should I change my diet in different cycle phases?

Yes. Follicular phase (Days 1 to 14): prioritise fermented foods + cruciferous veggies to aid estrogen detox. Luteal phase (Days 15 to 28): boost magnesium (dark chocolate, spinach) and complex carbs to stabilise blood sugar and progesterone.

Which foods support hormone production?

Healthy fats (avocado, salmon, olive oil) provide cholesterol, the raw material for all sex hormones. Add zinc (oysters, pumpkin seeds) for ovulation and selenium (Brazil nuts) for thyroid and estrogen balance.

Does seed cycling really work?

Small RCTs (e.g. 2019 pilot in Complementary Therapies in Medicine) show flax + pumpkin seeds in the follicular phase may increase lignan metabolism of estrogen, while sesame + sunflower in the luteal phase provide vitamin E to support progesterone. Evidence is promising but not definitive, track symptoms for 3 cycles.

Gut Health Essentials

Why do I bloat more before my period?

Rising progesterone slows gut motility; estrogen fluctuations alter water retention. A 2023 study in Gut Microbes linked low Bifidobacterium with worse PMS bloating, probiotic foods (kefir, kimchi) may reduce it.

What is the gut-hormone axis?

The estrobolome is the collection of gut microbes that metabolise estrogen. If imbalanced (dysbiosis), excess estrogen is reabsorbed, potentially worsening PMS or heavy periods. Fibre + polyphenols feed these microbes.

How can I improve gut health on a budget?

Eat 30+ plant points per week (herbs count), hydrate (2 L water), walk after meals, and include prebiotics daily, oats, garlic, bananas. No fancy supplements needed.

Lifestyle & Myths

Do tampons or pads affect hormone absorption?

No evidence shows significant systemic absorption from modern products. Choose organic cotton if concerned about trace chemicals, but focus on cycle-tracking for real insights.

I'm vegan, how do I avoid hormone disruptors in plant milks?

Choose unsweetened, fortified oat or almond milk without carrageenan (linked to gut irritation in animal studies). Rotate brands and pair with diverse proteins (tofu, tempeh, lentils).

The Nuts & Bolts

What role does the thyroid play in menstrual health?

Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism of sex hormones. Hypothyroidism can cause heavy, irregular periods; hyperthyroidism short, light ones. TSH and free T4 tests are key.

How does perimenopause affect gut health?

Declining estrogen reduces gut mucus and diversity, increasing inflammation. Phytoestrogen foods (linseeds, soy) + bone broth support both hormones and the gut barrier.

Can fasting help hormonal acne?

Intermittent fasting (14:10) may lower insulin and androgens in PCOS (2020 trial in Obesity). Avoid in the luteal phase if it spikes cortisol, listen to hunger cues.

Working with Girl Gut

How long until I see results from a Girl Gut plan?

Most clients notice changes in energy and digestion within 2 to 4 weeks; cycle-related symptoms often take a full cycle (4 to 6 weeks) to shift. Deeper microbiome work compounds over 3 to 6 months.

Do I need a gut microbiome test before starting?

No. The Initial Consultation is a great starting point and many clients see strong results without testing. The Gut Microbiome Test is best if you've tried other things and want clarity on what's happening at the bacterial level.

Working with Ash over the last 10 months has been life changing. For the first time in 20 plus years I finally understand my body as an ever changing woman and what it is trying to tell me, and with Ash's kind, thoughtful and holistic guidance she has taught and equipped me with so much wonderful knowledge to confidently take care of myself and finally listen to my body. She takes the time to listen and consider where you are at in your life in a totally nonjudgemental way that you feel safe to share everything because you know she is going to put you on the right path and reassure you when you are doubting the long and unfortunately slow process of healing yourself. I am so glad I decided to trust my 'gut' (pun intended) and book the consult with Ash as I wouldn't be where I am today without her continued support and care!

I can't recommend Girl Gut enough. After years of dealing with gut and hormone issues, I've finally found something that's helped me understand the root cause of what I've been experiencing. Working with Ash gave me the knowledge and power to take better care of my body and see real lasting change, rather than just temporary symptom relief. If your gut or hormones have felt like a mystery for way too long, Girl Gut is your way forward.

Ash is so kind, warm, gentle and supportive in your gut healing journey. She is a wealth of knowledge, but doesn't pressure you or stress you out to make too many changes at once for your gut health. She is a fantastic person to support you and guide you on your healing journey.
